Curated by Sophie Bonet
This exhibition examines domesticity as something the body learns to inhabit. Long before we understand space intellectually, we are shaped by it physically, and consider how these objects quietly structure comfort, intimacy, and social relations over time. Here, textile appears not simply as material, but as physical and emotional structures. Soft surfaces register touch, use, repetition, and time, revealing the home as more than shelter: a space where behaviors are conditioned–habits are formed, roles are learned, and daily life is continuously negotiated.

Weaving Together Old and New Media: Artist Talk by New York-based artist Emilio Vavarella.
Description: Miami Fiber Triennial invites you to an artist talk by Emilio Vavarella exploring weaving, identity, and the intersection of data and textiles. Vavarella will explore a body of work that examines the material, conceptual, and technological implications of weaving. Focusing on three key series—The Other Shapes of Me, AAS47692, and Lifeweave—the talk reflects on how textiles can function as a system to rethink identity, representation, and the relationship between nature, technology, and human experience. Through projects that translate genetic data into woven forms, Vavarella invites us to consider textile as a medium that connects bodies, data, memory, and contemporary systems of production. Emilio Vavarella is an artist and researcher, with a Ph.D. in Film and Visual Studies and Critical Media Practice (Harvard University). Vavarella is currently an Assistant Professor of Media and Film Studies at Skidmore College, and is the former Artist in Residence at the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard and a Harvard Horizons Scholar.

Thresholds of Ritual, Pilar Tobón, Ọmọlará Williams McCallister, and Joaquín Ponzzinibio;
Curated by the Mundo Arte Gallery curatorial team
Thresholds of Ritual is a collective exhibition that explores ritual as a space of transformation. Through textiles, sculpture, masks, objects, and performance, the exhibition creates a dialogue between body, matter, and symbol. Rather than presenting ritual as a literal act, the show understands it as a living structure of presence, an atmosphere where textile becomes skin, trace, and the body becomes a threshold.

Basketry has been part of human history since the beginning of civilization. Across all cultures, these skills have been developed by interweaving the plant fibers available at hand. Palm trees, which thrive in the tropical climate around us, have been a valuable resource for numerous cultures, used to craft items such as baskets, hats, huts, roofs, mats, and other handicrafts. In South Florida alone, more than 50 different types of palm trees can be found.

This hands-on workshop explores the rich potential of South Florida’s native plants as sources for sustainable, plant-based dyes. Participants will experiment with natural pigments derived from locally sourced plants and apply them directly to textiles. Through guided exploration, students will develop a personal dye sampler documenting formulas, color variations, and application techniques. Using three to four native plants, participants will also create a finished textile using stencils and resist methods, emphasizing both scientific observation and creative expression. Each participant will leave with a completed sampler and a unique naturally dyed textile. Book Presentation South Florida Color Palette: Nature & Plants

This volume investigates River of Grass, a site-specific installation featuring 21 artists interpreting the Florida Everglades' ecological and cultural narratives. These sculptural renderings of the Florida ecosystem, using fiber arts, native materials, and weaving techniques, draw inspiration from Marjory Stoneman Douglas's 1947 book, The Everglades: River of Grass. Custom-built six-foot-square looms provided both structure and scale for the installation, while the participating artists employed techniques rooted in their individual practices. Drawing from personal histories, cultural traditions, and contemporary experimentation, each work reflects a layered dialogue between inherited knowledge and innovative expression. The project originated with artist Aurora Molina, whose sustained engagement with nature and environmental processes sparked the initial conceptual framework. The exhibition was curated by Jodi Sypher of the Hollywood Art and Culture Center, whose vision further shaped the project's interdisciplinary and site-responsive approach. Situating textile practice within the expanded field of contemporary art, the project mobilizes fiber-based methodologies as a form of material inquiry, foregrounding processes of weaving, knotting, binding, and dyeing as aesthetic strategies and epistemological tools. This publication is sponsored in part by the State of Florida through the Division of Arts and Culture and the National Endowment for the Arts. Additional Support by The John S. and James L. The Fiber Artists Miami Association unites 22 artists who embrace the ambitious task of creating monumental weavings using thread, yarn, natural fibers, plant-based dyes, found objects, and deeply symbolic hand techniques. Through experimental textile practices, they examine themes of resilience, cultural and ecological memory, interconnectedness, and environmental stewardship. Here, the Everglades emerge as both subject and metaphor—a living, breathing system that reflects our shared destiny.

"The talk will take place June 28 from 1 to 2 and will be led by Dr. Adriana Herrera. While the ancient stone cities of the indigenous peoples of South America remained hidden beneath the earth or tangled in the thick forests for centuries, there exists, nonetheless, a thread of continuity, an indestructible link that connects the vast textile legacy of the continent with the revaluation of this art in modernity, extending through its various manifestations in contemporary textile art. This lecture on textile art will allow us to intertwine distant times, offering us a deeper perspective on both the origin and influence of the pre-Columbian universe and the textile works gathered by FAMA, which celebrate and preserve ancestral memory. The museum welcomes FAMA anyone interested in learning about textile traditions and their effect on contemporary art.

To Weave the Sky Textile Abstractions Exhibit,
El Espacio 23, Miami, FL
To Weave the Sky: Textile Abstractions from the Jorge M. Pérez Collection celebrates numerous textile-based works from the Pérez collection – many of which have never been publicly exhibited before – and engages these acquisitions as focal points from which to structure creative dialogues with artworks presented in other mediums. Featuring works from over 100 intergenerational artists from around the world, To Weave the Sky is inspired by weaving’s traditional ties to abstraction and geometry, landscape and the organic, tactility and intimacy, and indigenous cosmologies and ritual. Curated by Tobias Ostrander in close dialogue with curators of the Pérez Collection, Patricia M. Hanna and Anelys Alvarez, the show attempts to uncover contemporary fascination with the medium – one that has been historically marginalized to the genre of craft within Western art contexts.Press

Since ancient times, the number nine has been associated with the nine months of pregnancy and thus represents the feminine principle of creation. On the other hand, according to Hindu
philosophy, the creators of the classical arts found nine emotions or artistic moods that are part
of the expressions of life. With these principles in mind, nine women artists were chosen for this
exhibition: Aimée García, Aimée Pérez, Allison Kotzig, Evelyn Politzer, Ivonne Ferrer, Karla
Kantorovich, Liberty Worth, Milena-Martínez Pedrosa, and Valerie Lustgarten. Each of them
uses techniques considered domestic or crafts—such as sewing, weaving, embroidery, or
quilting—transforming or subverting them into works of contemporary art that express different
messages and emotions. The exhibition, conceived as part of the project Threading the City,
organized by the Fiber Artists Miami Association (FAMA), highlights the work of these nine
artists who use fibers or textiles but also recognizes them individually for their originality,
manual dexterity, and conceptual strength.

Presentation by Paula Kovarik followed by a wine and cheese reception.
About Paula:
"Mom taught me pretty much everything she knew—knitting, crocheting, embroidery, cooking, camping, fishing, compassion, and responsibility. Then I went to school and learned some more. That's the thing, I can't help myself, I love to learn. It all interests me, rocket science, plant biology, history, art, you name it, I'm interested. So I became a designer, the career that forces you to keep learning. I ran a business called Shades of Gray for over 25 years specializing in corporate and employee communications. And I loved it ... most every minute of it. Now I am making art."
Paula Kovarik received her Bachelor of Arts in graphic design from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. As the creative director and owner of Shades of Gray, Inc., a graphic design studio, she specialized in communications. Paula’s textile art has been recognized by several national venues.
